Woodwork Finishing in Ventnor, NJ
Ventnor's older homes came with heavy, well-made trim — wide casings, paneled doors, built-in cabinets and porch woodwork. Most of it just needs the paint build-up taken back and a proper finish put on.
- Deep casings and plinth blocks sanded back to crisp reveals
- Front doors finished flat with hardware removed
- Built-in cabinets and window seats treated as fine finishing
- Porch columns and rails sealed at the end grain
Original casings, front doors and porch millwork finished to match the house.
Walk into a 1920s Ventnor house and the millwork does the work: wide door and window casings with plinth blocks, paneled interior doors, built-in china cabinets, and stair parts that were milled rather than assembled from stock. After a century of repainting, the reveals are filled in and the paneled doors have lost their crisp edges.
Getting that back is sanding and patience. We take the build-up down on the profiles until the reveals and shadow lines are visible again, fill and feather the chips, and use a bonding primer where old oil enamel is still present. Doors come off their hinges, hardware comes off rather than getting painted over, and the enamel goes on in thin coats with full cure time between so it levels and hardens properly.
Outside, the porch is the exposed piece — columns, rails, beadboard ceilings and the front door itself, all facing salt air. Those get end-grain sealing, extra film build on rail caps and thresholds, and an exterior enamel or urethane system chosen for the way an Absecon Island porch actually weathers.
What's Included

- Doors removed, hardware taken off and finished off the hinges
- End-grain sealing and extra film build on rail caps and thresholds
- Built-in cabinets and window seats finished to furniture standard
- Full cure time between coats so the enamel hardens properly
How the Project Runs
- 1Site visit. We check reveals, paint build-up, door condition and porch wood for rot before quoting.
- 2Written scope. We price repair, sanding and finishing separately so you can see where the hours go.
- 3Repair and sand. Loose joints re-secured, filler feathered, profiles sanded back to clean shadow lines.
- 4Prime and seal. Bonding primer on the faces, sealer on end grain and joints before topcoats.
- 5Finish and cure. Two enamel or stain coats with proper cure time between, then a detail inspection.
