PCA Industry Standards

Why We Follow National Painting Standards

Clear standards from the first estimate.

At FreshCoat Works, every project is completed in accordance with the Industry Standards published by the Painting Contractors Association (PCA), a national trade organization founded in 1884. These standards exist to remove guesswork from painting projects. They define what a properly finished surface looks like, how surfaces should be prepared, and how work should be measured and evaluated, so that both our team and our clients share the same expectations from the first estimate to the final walkthrough.

We believe transparency builds trust. That is why we reference these standards directly in every FreshCoat Works estimate, not just as a general claim, but as a specific commitment tied to the work being performed.

The Standards

The Standards Behind Our Work

Every FreshCoat Works estimate references these PCA standards directly, so expectations are clear from start to finish.

PCA Standard P1: Properly Painted Surface

Defines what qualifies as a correctly painted surface and establishes the criteria for touch up and damage repair. This is the foundation of our two year workmanship warranty. It gives you and us the same definition of “done right.”

PCA Standard P9: Trade Terminology

Provides standard definitions for the terms used throughout the painting and decorating trade. When your estimate references prep work, coats, or finish types, this standard ensures the language means the same thing to everyone involved.

PCA Standard P10: Measuring for Estimating

Establishes a consistent methodology for measuring surfaces when preparing bids. This is the same approach we use in every FreshCoat Works estimate, giving you a scope that is measured accurately and broken down by area.

PCA Standard P14: Surface Preparation Levels

Defines the levels of surface preparation appropriate for repainting and maintenance projects. Every FreshCoat Works estimate specifies the exact level of prep your project requires, whether that is a full interior repaint or an exterior in need of scraping, sanding, and priming.

PCA Standard P21: Stain and Clear Coating on Wood

Establishes procedures for specifying stain and clear coat finishes on interior and exterior wood surfaces. This standard guides our wood refinishing work, including ProLuxe applications on decks, railings, and trim.

You are getting a scope of work grounded in national industry standards, documented through CompanyCam, and backed by our two year workmanship warranty. These standards protect you as the homeowner by requiring work that is free of defects and significant variation, and they protect the integrity of the trade by keeping every step of the process clear and verifiable.
