Unlike the barrier-island towns, Somers Point is mostly primary residences — post-war capes and ranchers near Bay Avenue and New Road, split-levels from the sixties and seventies, and newer construction filling in behind them. That means we're painting around people: home offices in use, kids' bedrooms that have to be slept in that night, and pets that can't be shut out of half the house all week.

The work plan follows from that. We use low-VOC, low-odor products, ventilate deliberately, and close out one area completely before opening the next so you always have finished rooms to live in. Older homes here still hide the usual traps — plaster over lath in the oldest sections, textured ceilings from a mid-century remodel, and oil-based trim that has to be dulled and bonded before any waterborne enamel will hold.

Because these houses are year-round, durability beats fashion. Hallways, stairwells and mudrooms near the bay get scrub-grade finishes, kitchens and baths get moisture-tolerant satin, and trim gets an enamel that can be wiped down rather than a wall paint brushed onto woodwork — the shortcut we most often find and correct in this town.
