Flat, Eggshell, or Satin? Choosing Finishes Room by Room

Two rooms painted the same color can feel completely different depending on sheen. Finish controls how light moves across a wall, how touchable the surface is, and how forgiving it will be of everyday life.
A simple room-by-room rule of thumb
- Bedrooms and ceilings: flat or matte — soft light, hides surface imperfections.
- Living rooms and hallways: eggshell — a gentle glow that stands up to cleaning.
- Kitchens and baths: satin — resists moisture and wipes down easily.
- Trim, doors, and built-ins: semi-gloss — crisp lines and durability where hands land.
When to break the rules
Older plaster walls often look better one step flatter than the default; beach-house sunrooms with strong daylight can carry a flatter sheen than a dim hallway could. The right call depends on the light your rooms actually get — which is why we bring drawdown samples and look at them with you at different times of day.
